Donald Trump today claimed his passports were ‘stolen’ in the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago last week, which would mean he could not leave the country. He called it an ‘assault on a political opponent.’
‘Wow. In the raid by the FBI or Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else. This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never before seen in our country. Third World,’ he wrote on his Truth Social social media account.
The Daily Mail reports that Trump likely has a regular blue passport issued to U.S. citizens and a red ‘diplomatic’ passport issued for official government travel. He would have received a diplomatic passport as president. But, without a legal passport, Trump would not be able to travel outside of the United States. It’s unclear if the passports were seized and if it was done because the former president is considered a flight risk.

Wrong. The passports are the property of the United States government. Like the top secret documents he stole, Trump probably thinks they belong to him. He and his people have been lying about the search all week and this is yet another example.

If he leaves the United States, yes.
Wrong. You don’t need a passport to leave the US. It would be hard to get into another country without one, however. An airline checks your passport when you’re leaving to make sure you’ll get into the other country so they won’t have to take you back, and as us generally required by other countries. But there’s nothing to stop you from, lets say, leaving the US on a boat and staying in international waters.

When asked why they had seized Mr. Trump’s passports, an FBI official told reporters, “Why not? We were told to do whatever we can to make Trump’s life miserable, so we seized the passports!”
However, another FBI official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, explained: “President Biden has a few Ukrainian business partners who were trying to leave this country secretly, without being noticed. So we gave them Trump’s passports to use.”
“It was crazy,” the FBI official said, “the Custom’s guy looked at the passports, and asked in amazement, “Are you telling me they got Trump comedian impersonators in Ukraine too?!”
The customs guy then asked one of the 3 Ukrainians to do a Trump imitation, but he demurred.
“Eeet iz not really such a gud immtzatzion,” he told them.
Weird. Gag by gag, something is odd this year.
