This Sunday: Jeff Jacoby and Dr. David Luchins to Debate in Chicago

JET, the Jewish Education Team of Chicago, will celebrate 11 years of outreach on Sunday, 8 Elul/September 11, at the North Shore Center for Performing Arts in Skokie.

The event will include “The Great Presidential Debate” featuring Dr. David Luchins and Jeff Jacoby, who will present liberal and conservative positions on presidential nominees to determine who will be better for America and Israel.

Dr. Luchins has been chairman of the Political Science Department at Touro since 1978. He is a graduate of Yeshiva College, and earned his Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center in 1977. Dr. Luchins teaches courses in American Politics and International Relations and serves as founding dean of Touro’s Lander College for Women. He also teaches at Aish HaTorah.

Dr. Luchins served on the staff of United States Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan for twenty years as special assistant, senior assistant, and senior advisor. Prior to that, he served on the 1972 presidential campaign staff of Senator Hubert Humphrey and as a National Vice Chairperson of Democrats for Nixon. He has served as vice-president of the Orthodox Union since 1976, and as a member of the executive committee of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs since 1984. He also served in the past on National Commissions of the Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Fund for Justice.

Jeff Jacoby has been an op-ed columnist for The Boston Globe since February 1994. Seeking a conservative voice, the Globe hired him away from the Boston Herald, where he had been chief editorial writer since 1987. The Boston Phoenix has dubbed his twice-weekly essays “a must-read,” describing him as “the region’s pre-eminent spokesman for Conservative Nation.”

A native of Cleveland, Mr. Jacoby graduated with honors from George Washington University in 1979 and from Boston University Law School in 1983. He briefly practiced law at the firm of Baker & Hostetler, returning to Boston in 1984 to work on a political campaign. In 1985-87, he was an assistant to Dr. John Silber, president of Boston University.

For several years, Jacoby was a political commentator for WBUR, Boston’s National Public Radio affiliate. He is a frequent guest on radio talk shows across North America.

The event will feature an open-to-the-public question-and-answer session.
