Those Close to Rav Yaakov Yosef Deny Chacham Ovadiah’s Opposition to ‘Toras Hamelech’

A border patrol vehicle was stationed this morning at the residence of Rav Yaakov Yosef, in the Yerushalayim neighborhood of Shmuel Hanovi. The vehicle startled hundreds of local yeshiva bochurim, who rushed to Rav Yosef’s home, despite his absence at the time.

Sources close to Rav Yosef were concerned that security forces had arrived to arrest him for his haskamah for Toras Hamelech the halachic work authored by Rabbi Yitzchak Shapira of Yitzhar.

Those close to Rav Yosef rejected an earlier report stating that his father, Rav Ovadiah Yosef, did not approve of Toras Hamelech.

“The report is a lie,” they said. “The rav never expressed disapproval of the book.”

This morning, a group of journalists accompanied Rav Yaakov Yosef from his home to the kever of Shimon Hatzaddik. Rav Yaakov Yosef requested that they put on tefillin, and they agreed. He was delighted when one of them said that it was his first time wearing tefillin.

In a police debriefing, the police reported that Rav Yaakov was respectfully questioned, and he was not taken into custody.

On Monday, the police apprehended Rabbi Dov Lior, the chief rabbi of Kiryat Arba, on his way to Migron by way of Yerushalayim.
