pollard[Letter below.] Ahead of Yom Kippur, thousands of Jews around the world have signed a letter asking mechilah, forgiveness, of Jonathan Pollard. Pollard has served 24 years of a life sentence in prison in the United States for passing classified security-related information to Israel. The sentence is harsher than any sentence given even to those who spied on the U.S. on behalf of enemy states.

The letter which will be sent to Pollard in the near future asks Pollard’s forgiveness on the ISraeli government’s behalf for its failure to take action to have him released.

“We are ashamed that after you have suffered for 24 years in an American prison, our government still ignores you, and does not make even the minimum effort towards an Israeli agent who acted on the state’s behalf and for the state’s security,” the letter says. “We promise that from now on, we will not rest or be silent until the day that we greet you and your wife Esther at the airport.”

As of last night, organizers had gotten over 4,500 signatures; they are hoping for more than  10,000.

  1. What about the Jewish media and hechsherim asking mechila from Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin?
What about all the other NIRDAFIM of Klal Yisroel who people are too scared to help out, because it’s an unpopular cause?

It’s very nice to talk the talk NOW, after trouble hit. They first let them fall, before helping out. Once a person crashes, it’s much harder to rebuild them.

  2. Whats the real story here?im sure Isreal goverment or US goverment is not stam keeping him in jail for soo long. There got to be another side side to the story.

  3. #3 – the mitzvah of pidyon shvuyim makes no difference if a person is dead or alive. it does not discriminate, so your question is invalid. he is beleived to be held by syria.

and if he is dead, then the family eserves to know so they can sit shiva, which after 27 years his father couldnt do and now he’s dead.

  4. #3 Pollard is being held for breaking the law (for committing a treasonous act, and was tried and lawfully sentenced)
Baumel was an innocent victim of a kidnapping and a prisoner of war.
Biiiiiiig difference. (an he is an american citizen).

  5. To #6 & 7

You are correct but you didnt address the first point: Pollard is being held by an ally who Iarel deals with on a regular basis, Baumel, Shalit etc. are being held by enemies who we have no access to…

  6. With all due respect to everyone who signed this, what is the real purpose here? Do they expect him to be mochel them for not doing everything within their power to have him released?

Why does it have to come to this? Why cant we act in the beginning?

    Besuros Tovos. G’mar Chasima Tova.

  7. 1) Even so, is that an excuse for the community’s deplorable inaction? we have access. We have untapped and untilized diplomacy. Access? Tidbit: Did you know that the syrian prison facility beleived to be where baumel is being held just north of the Syiran border with Iraq? Less than 100 kilometers from where American troops carried out major iraq war operation a few yrs ago.
