kever-noam-elimelechToday, thousands of Chassidim will be visiting the tzion of the Noam Elimelech, Rav Elimelech Weisblum of Lizhensk zt”l, whose 224th yahrtzeit is today, 21 Adar.

Rav Elimelech, the author of Noam Elimelech, was a talmid of the Maggid of Mezritch. Among his prominent talmidim were Rav Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Apta, the Chozeh of Lublin, the Maggid of Kozhnitz, and Rav Menachem Mendel of Rimanov.

Airplanes were chartered to transport Yidden from the United States and Eretz Yisroel to join Jews from across Europe in the small Polish town of Lizhensk to daven at the kever.

This year, because the yahrtzeit falls out on Friday, many Yidden will be spending Shabbos near the tzion as well.

In the past, it was very difficult for kohanim to go to Lizhensk to daven near the kever of Rav Elimelech due to the fact that the boundaries of the old cemetery of Lizhensk were unclear. It was therefore not known whether they were inadvertently walking on burial grounds. Two years ago, however, much research was done to determine the exact borders of the cemetery from historical records. Based on that information, it has been much easier for kohanim to have access and to be able to daven closer to the kever.

It’s probably k’dai to point out that Reb Mendel reichberg z”l, who was just niftar 6 weeks ago, was in the forefront of arranging these trips loooooooooooooooooong before it became so popular! Y’hi Zichro Baruch!
