Today is Mother’s Day, a secular holiday that recognizes motherhood in general and the positive contributions of mothers to society. In Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the United States, Mother’s Day always falls on the second Sunday of each May.
The modern Mother’s Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor its mother, and it’s now celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Father’s Day, the celebration honoring fathers. This holiday is relatively modern, being created at the start of the 20th century.
In most countries, the Mother’s Day celebration is a recent holiday derived from the original US celebration.
Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins.
In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day,” and created the Mother’s Day International Association.
She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.
This is also the spelling used by President Woodrow Wilson in the law making official the holiday in the U.S., by the U.S. Congress on bills, and by other U.S. presidents on their declarations.
Common usage in English language also dictates that the ostensibly singular possessive “Mother’s Day” is the preferred spelling, although “Mothers’ Day” (plural possessive) is not unheard of.

Too many Yidden get caught up in this frivolity. For Jews, Mother’s day is everyday. There’s a mother’s day card in the Aseres Hadibros.
To all those who claim “every day is mother’s day” – halevai at least one day a year we had proper kibud em. Lets at least take one day to make an effort to show proper hakaros hatov to those that have done everyhting and more for us.

Every day is Mother’s Day and every day is Father’s Day. Kabeid es ovicha v’es imecha is not a one day a year mitzvah.
These goyishe “celebrations” are nothing more than scams from the greeting card and gift industries.
For a person to think about their parents because of an external reminder – especially from the goyim – is a chisoron in emunah.

#5 im not sure if you didnt read or just misunderstood #3’s comment. Of course we should appreciate parents every day, no frum person disputes that. However sadly many do not. Kibud av is one of the hardest mitzvas (ayin end of 1st perek kidushin) Yankel is saying we should “AT LEAST” take one day a year to attempt to show proper apprecation, halevai more than one day and halevai every day, but again as the gemara says and as most peoples experience shows this isnt so easy.
Incidently this whole discussion is moot, since if a mother expects a mother’s day card or Happy mother’s day wish then there is a chiyuv deoraisa to provide those wishes (semos 20:12). If the mother finds it unneccesary (i doubt such a mother exists but assuming she does), then obviously there is no need to provide wishes that she has no interest in.
Klu Klux Klans Congressman Rep. James Thomas Heflin from Alabama proposed the legislation in Congress establishing Mother’s Day.
