toeivah-paradeThe toeivah pride parade in Yerushalayim ended this evening without incident. An estimated 4,000 people took part in the parade, which started from Liberty Bell Park and continued up Rechov Dovid Hamelech to Independence Park, where an evening rally capped off the event. The streets in the area were closed to traffic. Over 1,500 police officers, under the command of Yerushalayim Police Chief Cmdr. Aharon Franco, were on the streets to prevent any altercations or violence. A group of right-wing activists, led by Baruch Marzel, held a small demonstration against the march, which they termed the ‘Abomination Parade,’ at Paris Square. There were no clashes, but one man was arrested for throwing an egg in the direction of parade participants.

Meanwhile, an anti-toeivah pride demonstration was held in Meah She’arim and police closed off Kikar Shabbos in Geulah to traffic.

This year, the charedi community decided to avoid public protests in order not to give the event additional publicity. However, the gedolim reiterated that the parade is an abomination and an anathema to Torah values and the kedushah of Yerushalayim.

Interestingly, a poll found that two-thirds of Yerushalayim residents – even non-religious ones – were opposed to holding such an event in the city.

The Eida Hachareidis stated that it would refrain from demonstrating against the parade.

“What do we want to give a few people publicity for?” asked Reb Yoel Kraus of the Eidah “We made our point two years ago by getting the international toeivah parade in Yerushalayim canceled.”

Not surprisingly, the small Conservative and Reform Jewish movements in Yerushalayim voiced their support for the event.

Wow! Such courage! To bad they didn’t listen to Harav Moshe Shternbuch, Rosh Av Beis Din of the Eidah Hachareidis of Yerushalayim! TALK IS CHEAP!!!

  2. (“However, the gedolim reiterated…Wow! Such courage! To bad they didn’t listen to Harav Moshe Shternbuch, Rosh Av Beis Din of the Eidah Hachareidis of Yerushalayim! TALK IS CHEAP!!!”)

How could you mock the words of the gedolim?? First of all, part of their cheshbon was that- while protest is important, once it had been done, it was not worth publicizing the toeivos and expose them to the young innocent minds of the children of Yerushalayim. Second, even if we don’t know at all what their reasoning is, how DARE you speak so disrespectfully about whom even you admit are “gedolim”? Their opinion is a little more emesdik that anyone commenting on any blog…
(forgive my frustration – it upsets me terribly that people seem to feel like there’s no issurim when simply ‘typing’…)

  3. (… I forgot to mention that using one gadol to try to back your opinion up is not an excuse for the lashon hara against ANY yid, let alone gedolim)

  4. To Anon:
It’s okay, you can put your head back in the sand now! If you are so concerned about your children, what are you doing on the internet? Did you get a heter? You phoney!
Letters & statements are worthless! You can use it to clean yourself off.
Ever notice how the big “Organizations” lobby strong and hard when they really want something – like MONEY, MONEY, MONEY? They don’t just send a letter or make a statement to be Yoizah Zien!!! When it comes to “funding”, they are not worried about “rocking the boat”. It shows where their priorities are! Kvod Shomayim is at the bottom of the list R”L! Very very shameful! Rav Shternbuch SHLITA understood this.

  5. i’m wondering why matzav sees fit to advertise for these beheimos. take some direction from hamodias’ journalistic approach “the public has the right not to know”

  6. To “Let me get this straight”,
I happen to be following the guidance of my rav in my activity on internet, not that the irrelevant name-calling warrants a response. I simply wonder how it is possible to use the word “SHLITA” after a gadol’s name and in the same statement bash gedolim and tzedakos as a whole. I don’t understand how someone who really cared about “kavod shomayim” would say a word that you said. Unfortunately, money is very hard to come by for yeshivos and tzedaka “organizations”, and it is necessary to publicize the requests for tzedaka via means that have absolutely no connection to the subject at hand. “Rocking the boat” has nothing to do with the concern that I heard b’shem the gedolim. All that I mean to say is one should never intentionally speak against anything said by any of the gedolim, including R’ Moshe Shternbuch SHLITA. If you value the Torah, you should value and respect the individuals and institution which represent the Torah.
