toldos-aharon-box-small[Photo below.] Prior to Lag Ba’omer, various p’sakim were released regarding the permissibility of kohanim entering Meron to visit the kever of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai due to the existence of graves throughout the area.

Interestingly, the Toldos Aharon Rebbe, who is a kohen, ended up visiting Meron on Lag Ba’omer – in a box. Chassidim of the Rebbe had a special box constructed to serve as a mechitzah, a halachic barrier between him and the any problematic area of Meron to avoid any halachic questions of tumah. The box was placed on the back of a pick-up truck and the Rebbe was driven to Meron to daven.

  1. Does an ohel zaruk work to be choletz against tumas mes

and if so what is the issue of kohanim flying over graveyards

    obviously requires significant halachick research

  2. A cohen is a cohen is a cohen. If the halacha forbids him entering a burial site for fear of tumas mes then all cohanim must abide by that ruling.

  3. if you say that this contraption has the status of Aron Teiva Migdal
    maybe .. but ..
    why cant you put windows
glass does prevent tuma trvel from area to area

  4. Mais Gadol Haya Sham. Why not thick plexiglass or lucite instead of a wooden box. Could not be a moras ayin issue since everyone knew who was in the box. Not to second guess, but what is the point – if the box prevents tumah then it would also be a barrier to experiencing kedushas hamakom.

  5. Maybe “Ner Mitzvah” can market this box and sell it in Eichlers for use by all Kohanim. They can offset the cost of it by selling advertising space on the outside for posters such as Vaad Harabonim and Kupat Ha’ir.

  6. if it was tzanid psil than it is fine. intersestingly a psak was issued about rodes where cohanim must go over a cemetery they should go in a nylon bag sealed with plaster etc. so it is tzamid psil. for a copy of the teshuvah look in the hakdamah to maaros chaim mishnayos on ohalos

  7. Similar to how Lubavitche Kohanim visit their Rebbe at the cemetery in Sringfield Gardens, Quuens. Bodies are also sent by plane to Ertez Yisroel and are put into a large cardboard box which makes it a separate reshus. By the way, the Rebbe’s sons, also Kohanim, walked up the Mehadrin Road. The Rebbe returned by ordinary automobile.

  8. #16,

Tzamid pusil is a din in kailim. This box was probably bigger than 40 saah and therefore not a a kli but an ohel.

An ohel zaruk is not chotzes bifnei hatuma. How did this work?

  9. This whole issue is covered in Gemarah Chagigah towards the end of the last Perek. It is very interesting and discusses inyanim of the history of the settlement of Eretz Yisrael after the Churban and what happened there that caused this problem of tumah for all Bnai Yisrael, not only Kohanim. Today only the Holiest Kohanim concern themselves with this issue of traveling in parts of Eretz Yisrael that may be problematic. It’s all in the Gemarah.
