mbdTomorrow, Aderet Music will unveil a brand new album from Mordechai Ben David Werdyger. The album, titled “Kessufim” (Yearning), features the Shira Choir and is expected to be MBD’s final album.

The new album comes thirty-eight years after the release of MBD’s first record.

The new album features fourteen songs, including ten new niggunim and four old compositions. Composers include MBD himself, Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz of Los Angeles, and Yitzchok Fuchs.

MBD was born on April 16, 1951, to Chazzan and Mrs. David Werdyger. Chazzan Werdyger, originally from Cracow, was one of the “Schindler Jews” and miraculously survived the Nazi inferno during the Holocaust.

mbd-kesifimThe sixty-year-old singer has produced dozens of Jewish music albums over the past 40 years and continues to reside in Sea Gate, Brooklyn, where he records much of his music at his own personal studio. In addition to his inspiring singing, MBD is a talented composer, having authored dozens of big hits over the years.

MBD has related that he first began singing at the urging of his father, Rav David Werdyger, who, after hearing a composition of his, told him to make an album. In 1973, he released his first album, Original Chassidic Niggunim.

He said, interestingly, that he thought he would ‘chalish‘ (pass out) the first time he got up to sing in public.

“The pachad was awesome,” said MBD.

MBD apparently got over that fear, heralding in a new age of Yiddishe music. His last album, titled Kulam Ahuvim, was released in February of 2009.

  1. Keep going. I’ve been listening to his “Ani Maamin” cd (with the Montreal Boys Choir) produced many years ago, the last week. It is a great cd to get in the Yomim Noraim spirit. A great classic!

  2. No No No! R’ Mordche you cannot let this be the last one! Please continue recording for many more years. We need you to continue making us happy..

  3. There is a story that happened when MBD met the Ribnitzer Rebbe for the first time, before he was a CHASSIDIC singing sensation, and where MBD lost his voice. The Rebbe “restored” it al t’nai that MBD wouldn’t sing to mixed crowds and would change his whole approach to singing. MBD was maskim. Since MBD experienced this first-hand, he immediately became a Chusid of the Rebbe and moved to Seagate to be near him. The rest his Jewish Music History, as they say.
