yeshiva-beth-yehudahUnited States Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano will serve as guest speaker at the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah Annual Dinner tonight.

Secretary Napolitano is leading the United States’ collective efforts to secure the country from the threats we face – from terrorism, to coordinating the response to the H1N1 flu virus, to natural disasters.  President Obama chose the then-governor of Arizona to be his Secretary of the Homeland Security. In her role as governor, Napolitano was recognized as a national leader on homeland security, border security and immigration. She was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association and was named one of the top five governors in the country by Time Magazine. Napolitano was also the first female Attorney General of Arizona and served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona.

Napolitano was born in New York City and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and Albuquerque, NM.

The Beth Yehudah Dinner is being held this year at the Marriott Hotel in the Detroit RenCen. The yeshiva is honoring Arthur A. Weiss with the Golden Torah Award. Over 2,200 members of the community will join together for this special event tonight.

  1. I understand that as a frum website, you can not show a picture of her. But her name? Why would you write an article and leave out her first name?? Maybe we should cross out all the times the Torah, Neviim, Kesuvim and Gemaros mention the name of a woman as well??

  2. The building in the picture is located at 12305 Dexter Boulevard in Detroit’s inner city and was home to Beth Yehudah until sometime in the mid 1960s. the building in the forefront was Cong Mogen Avraham and housed Beth Yehudah classes and the building further back was the Daniel Laven Builing which was built in the 1950s as Beth Yehudah’s enrollment increased.

Today Beth Yehudah has a boys building on Lincoln Road in Southfield Michigan which is also the home of Cong Mogen Avraham and a girls building (The Salley Allen Alexander Beth Jacob School for Girls) on West Ten Mile Road in Oak Park, Michigan.

  4. Anyone looking at this posting may be interested in the web site “the lost synagogues of Detroit. It has pictures and a history of almost all the old shuls in the Dexter – Linwood – 12th Street, etc. neighborhood. You almost feel like you’re going back in time.
