Tony Blair: “I Read the Koran Every Day”

tony-blairHe was notoriously reluctant to discuss religion while Prime Minister, with his chief spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously commenting: ‘We don’t do God.’

But since leaving Downing Street in 2007, Tony Blair has become increasingly open about the importance of religion.

Mr Blair, who converted to Catholicism months after leaving Number 10, has now spoken of how he reads the Koran every day.

Reading the Islamic religion’s holy book ensured he remained ‘faith-literate’, the former Labour leader said.

In an interview with the Observer magazine, published yesterday he said: ‘To be faith-literate is crucial in a globalised world, I believe.

‘I read the Qur’an [Koran] every day. Partly to understand some of the things happening in the world, but mainly just because it is immensely instructive.’

Blair believes that a knowledge of the faith informs his current role as Middle East envoy for the Quartet of the United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia.

The former PM’s work, which has cost British taxpayers more than £2million, aims to help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Blair has previously praised the Muslim faith as ‘beautiful’ and said the Muslim Prophet  had been ‘an enormously civilizing force.’

In 2006 he said the Koran was a ‘reforming book, it is inclusive. It extols science and knowledge and abhors superstition. It is practical and way ahead of its time in attitudes to marriage, women and governance’.

But Blair has also faced the devastation wreaked by violent jihadists who interpret the Koran as a call to arms.

He was Prime Minister when the July 7 suicide bombers attacked London in 2005, murdering 52 innocent people.

Not only does reading the Koran support his peace envoy role, it also gives him something in common with sister-in-law Lauren Booth.

Journalist Miss Booth – Cherie Blair’s half sister – raised eyebrows after announcing last October that she had converted to Islam after what she described as a ‘holy experience’ during a visit to a shrine in Iran.

Mr Blair also used the Observer interview to dismiss claims he was on a Christian ‘crusade’ when taking Britain into the highly divisive war in Iraq.

His former constituency agent John Burton said two years ago that Mr Blair ‘believed strongly at the time, that intervention in Kosovo, Sierra Leone – Iraq too – was all part of the Christian battle; good should triumph over evil, making lives better.’

But the ex-Premier said: ‘People still ask me if military decisions in Iraq or Afghanistan were based on some kind of divine instruction. It’s rubbish.

‘Of course not. Just as I couldn’t go into a corner and pray to ask God what the minimum wage should be.’

  1. Jorgen, please withdraw your post. Blair was a big supporter of Israel and was very good for the Jews of England when he was PM. Calling him a Nazi and a Mamzer is not right.

  2. Historically he is right – if you think the arab world is bad now, you should read what it was like before Islam was invented. It is still a false religion, but the Rambam said these false religions that copy Judaism make the world a better place and prepare the gentiles for the coming of the true Moshiach

  3. #1 two things:
    a. A Nazi cant be a liberal by definition
    b. You may need a history refresher course, as the Nazis didnt spend their time reading the Koran. Halevai, thats what they did.

  4. #7 – you’re out of touch with modern usage. Now, “liberal” just means “I don’t like it.” Same for “Nazi.” So #1 wasn’t saying anything remotely related to the facts. He was just screaming, ‘I REALLY don’t like him!”

One of the reasons we’re having trouble getting this country back on track is that people aren’t paying attention to reality or logic when they talk. Most “political” speech in this country nowadays is just an emotional scream – not too constructive for rational and effective problem-solving.

Maybe if we all bought dictionaries and started using them….

  5. BTW, I don’t like Mr. Blair either, and never have, but it has to do with his general policies and outlook. He’s not a liberal, not a Nazi, and most likely isn’t illegitimate. He’s just a lousy excuse for a world leader.

  6. #7:

Now I am going to have to turn things on their head.

    a. Nazism is an ideology. They did not really have an economic system. True, they were reactionary, but that does not mean that every single member of the party was to the right.
    b. Actually, there was an SS unit, trained by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husayni, that was composed solely or mostly of Bosnian Muslims. I would assume they read the Qur’an every Friday.

  7. Um jorgen,
    a. a Nazi by definition cannot be a liberal. Look up the definitions of both if you have to.
    b. Of course there where some Nazis who read the koran. SO what? There where a lot more who read the bible. so using your “logic” hes less of a nazi by reading the koran as opposed to the bible. Besides, again the nazis werent bad because they read the koran (Even if they all did regularly). If you dont know what they did, look it up as well. Its very very bad.
