A top U.S. egg producer raised prices at the start of the pandemic, charging as much as four times more and hitting low-income families, according to a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Hillandale Farms, one of the top five American egg producers, allegedly gouged prices on more than four million cartons sold to major grocery stores, the U.S. military and wholesale distributors. The company pocketed an estimated $4 million by unlawfully increasing prices, according to the lawsuit.

The move follow a similar complaint by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, which in April accused Cal-Maine Foods Inc., the largest egg producer in the U.S., of taking unfair advantage of the pandemic to raise prices by around 300%. Cal-Maine strongly denied the allegations back then. Hillandale didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

  1. I don’t understand what is wrong with raising prices? The economy works on supply and demand. More demand less supply causes prices to rise. When prices go down because of oversupply, I don’t hear people saying that we should pay more

    • Aldi was selling eggs for a $1.09 in March. It wasn’t an issue of supply and demand it was a made up fear that supplies were low to price gouge.

    • supply and demand is different than raising prices because you can. this isn’t a case of less eggs making the price go up. its a case of increasing prices because they can. if companies want to play unethical games don’t be surprised when lawmakers decided to make legislation that caps the prices of staple goods!

Reminds me of the fellow who called the butcher asking if he had chicken legs? When the butcher answered in the affirmative, the caller said, boy you must have a hard time walking!

  3. I remember very clearly discussing with my wife, why are eggs so expensive all of a sudden? Were chickens dying due to Coronavirus as well? It’s the same evilness of unzera companies that jack up the prices on their products right before a major Yom Tov. Loh nislach. Rashaim arurim who have a special place in gehenom awaiting them.
