rav-koppelman[Video below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman, the zekan roshei hayeshivos, the venerated senior rosh yeshiva of our time, who has passed away at the age of 106.

Rav Koppelman had just been hospitalized this week at a local hospital after feeling weak. The hospitalization came just several weeks after doctors discovered various concerns with the rosh yeshiva‘s kidneys and performed a procedure. The rosh yeshiva had improved and gone home, only to be taken to the hospital.

Rav Koppelman was the rosh yeshiva of the Lucerne Yeshiva in Switzerland.

Rav Koppelman, a prime disciple of Rav Shimon Shkop zt”l in Grodno, first led the yeshiva in Heide before World War II. In 1946, he established Yeshiva Eitz Chaim in Kappelen, and the yeshiva later moved to Wilrijk, Belgium. In the United States, Rav Koppelman was first a maggid shiur at Yeshivas Bais Eliezer in Williamsburg, founded and headed by Rav Shlomo Hakohen Rotenberg zt”l, rov of the Agudah Shul and author of Toldos Am Olam. Later, Rav Koppelman established Yeshiva Shaarei Yosher in Williamsburg, which later moved to and is presently in Boro Park.

Rav Koppelman subsequently became rosh yeshiva in Lucerne, Switzerland, succeeding Rav Moshe Soloveitchik there. Until last year, he continued to give regular daily shiurim and was in the bais medrash most hours of the day, making himself fully accessible to his talmidim.

The Olam HaTorah has lost a true giant in Torah, avodah and middos

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. RE COMMENT #1-
In 1948 he went to Kappelen (Antwerp); came to US in late 1950’s and then went to Luzern in 1963 to succeed R Moshe Soloveitchik ztl. During WWII, he was in Siberia and then in Samarkand, where he married after the war. I believe his oldest daughter was born in Samarkand.
