North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared his intention to adopt the “toughest” approach in dealing with the United States, according to reports from state media, just weeks before US President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the White House.

Kim described the United States as “the most reactionary state that regards anti-communism as its invariable state policy,” accusing Washington of deepening its security alliances with South Korea and Japan, which he claimed were evolving into “a nuclear military bloc for aggression.”

Kim’s remarks could be part of a calculated strategy: earlier this year, a former North Korean official told Reuters that Pyongyang was hopeful that a second term for Trump might offer an opportunity to make progress in nuclear talks with Washington. However, many analysts argue that Trump’s focus on ending the war in Ukraine, coupled with North Korea’s recent support for Russia, undermines the chances for such negotiations, as reported by The Associated Press.

Fox News senior strategic analyst Gen. Jack Keane (Ret.) argues Kim Jong Un is likely trying to be recognized as a nuclear power by the international community.
