Tragedy has struck the Flatbush community, as a mother and three of her children were killed when a fast-moving fire tore through their Brooklyn home early this morning. The victims are Aliza Azan, 39, Moshe Azan, 11, Yitzchak Azan, 7, and Henrietta Azan, 3, all of whom were found on the second floor.

The fire occurred at 1946 East 14th Street in Flatbush.

The fire started at about 2:30 a.m. Some fire officials are saying that the blaze was sparked by a menorah.

Firefighters and Hatzolah members raced to the scene, where smoke was already billowing out of the home and several people were trapped.

Eleven people, including Mr. Yosef Azan and four other children, were injured.

Yosef is a beloved manager at the Hat Box on Coney Island Avenue at Avenue O.

Aliza Azan is a daughter of Rabbi Albert Hamra of the Syrian Jewish community in Israel.

During the blaze, some family members were forced to jump from windows to save their lives.

Yosef was taken to the Staten Island University Hospital Burn Unit in critical condition along with his 16-year-old daughter, 15-year-old son, and 13 year old son.

All are asked to daven for Shilat bas Aliza, Daniel ben Aliza and Avraham ben Aliza.

Umacha Hashem dimah me’al kol ponim.

  1. Rachmana litzlan! May Hashem comfort those who are mourning. “Harofeh shevurei lev umichabesh liatzvosam.”
Of course we can never EVER claim to know why these things happen and oftentimes there is never one reason alone, and in some crazy way this is necessary for the betterment of khal Yisrael as with all tragedies because Hashem is building the third Beis Hamikdash with our tears, it is interesting go point out that Rebbe Nachman of Breslov zy”a discusses a connection between the death of tzaddikim and fires breaking out. (Likutei Moharan Tinyana, 67) Unfortunately we lost Rav Shteinman Zt”l and now this. Oy, Master of the world “ad masai?!”

  2. BDE! Heartbreaking! Tears still come to my eyes when I think of the 7 Sassoon children o”h who died in a fire a year and a half ago, and now this. May Hashem comfort the family besoch she’ar aveilei Tzion v’Yerushalayim and give a refuah shelemah bimherah for the other victims.

  3. BD”E.
    Refua shleima to survivors.
Some fire officials have no idea what they are talking about: a menorah can’t start a fire at 2:30 AM, since most have enough fuel to last to 7:30 PM. Can’t spark a fire 7 hours after it goes off.

    • I’m taking about a standard glass cup for a Chanukah menorah: can only fit enough oil to last about 2.5 hours. Most people light around 5pm. Hence, the menorah light goes off at about 7:30 PM. Even if you light at 9 PM, it would still go off at 11:30 PM – still not enough to start a 2 AM fire. Obviously, the fire officials would like to find a quick explanation so that they can wrap up the investigation, a desire to mock the religious Jews might also play a role.

  4. It does sound strange that a fire could be caused at 2am from candles lit at 6pm. However, it’s critical to be careful and vigilant with any candles. Who knows if it wasn’t a stray spark that was smoldering on some furniture Rachmana Litzlan.

  5. BD”H.

No words. Sad heart renching. It hurts to see this. I don’t know this family but we are one as Klal Yisroel. My heart goes out.

  6. There was a report that the menorah was a large oil one at the front of the house. Probably huge wells for oil.
It is critical that no menorah be allowed to burn once the people in the house go to sleep!
Make a tenai so that any leftover doesn’t need to be burned.
Better off, put in enough for no more than an hour. And then keep your eyes open!

  7. The fire officials did NOT say it was caused by a menorah, they said it’s a possibility. They have been VERY respectful of religion on how they have been talking. So you should also talk respectfully about them
