candle-small4Hurricane Irene Coverage: [Levaya info below.] Hurricane Irene claimed its first frum victim today, as live electrical wires near Merric Drive in Spring Valley, NY, took the life of Reb Moshe Reichenberg z”l.

Several individuals were injured in the incident, including a young child, Chayim Reuvein Dovid ben Chava Leah. A spokesman for the Rockland County Emergency Operations Center says the child is in very serious condition at Westchester Medical Center’s burn unit. The child had to be taken by land with a police escort to the hospital because helicopters were grounded. It took 20 minutes to get the child there.

Spokesman Ron Levine says the child’s father was treated for burns at another hospital and released.

Reb Moshe Reichenberg z”l was assisting a child when he came in contact with the live wires that had fallen. He was electrocuted trying to help the child who had gone into a flooded street that had live wires embedded in it.  Friends and neighbors are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of a beloved member of the community.

Yehi zichro boruch.

Update: The levaya of Reb Moshe Yosef Reichenberg will take place at 5 p.m. at Yeshiva Ohr Somayach in Monsey.

  1. Terrible, and well maybe a slight nichumu if it’s at all possible but Rabbi Reichenberg was doing a mitzva of trying to rescue the boy in the last moments of his life. Yihe zichroi buruch

  2. #’s 1 & 2
    Great move.
    You really added alot.
If you have something – anthing – constructive to say, say it.
    Otherwise – get a life.

  3. While we all mourn R’ Reichenberg’s death, let’s not forget his heroic acts to save a 6 year old boy who is in critical condition! He has burns all over his body and tehillim can certainly help!
A name was added: Chaim Reuven Dovid ben Chava Leah
    Thank You

  4. I was initially astounded: Shluchei mitzvah einan nezokin! But I’m afraid it must have been considered shechiach hezeika…terrible.

  5. I apologize to the family for the American media not reporting this story accurately. Rabbi Moshe is a hero and should be honored as such. Thank you to the family for this huge sacrifice. I am not sure what the Jewish custom is when someone passes. So I will just say I pray God blesses this family and this Rabbi is honored! He is a hero to so many!

  6. Meier A, I’m glad you brought up the point of saying something worthwhile.

When we say BDE, we are blessing HaShem for being the True Judge, and reinforcing within ourselves the fact that nothing is accidental and HaKadosh Baruch Hu acted justly even when it might seem that this fellow was doing something that should have saved his life.

We all like when things “make sense,” and it’s easy to question G-d. That’s why saying Baruch Dayan HoEmes IS doing something, and adding something constructive.

Thanks for bringing it up so we could focus on why we say it.
