candle-small6It is with great sadness that we report the tragic passing of Mr. Ovadiah Mussaffi, 52, and Mr. Larry Krause, 50, two beloved members of the Teaneck, NJ, community, who were killed during the nightmarish Nor’easter that swept across North Jersey over Shabbos.

Mr. Mussaffi and Mr. Krause were walking on the sidewalk along Jefferson Street in the evening when wind gusts toppled a large oak tree, which struck and killed them.

The accident occurred as Mr. Mussaffi and Mr. Krause were on the way home after davening at Congregation Shaarei Orah, the Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck, located on Jefferson Street near Tonoika Park. Mr. Mussaffi was the president of the shul, which is led by Rabbi Ely Allen.

May their families have a nechama and may we know no further tzaar.

Yehi zichrom boruch.

  1. Falling Tree Kills 2 In Teaneck During Storm

The winds were howling last night, strong enough to bring down large tree limbs and, in the worst cases, entire trees. In one of Teaneck’s predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, where residents on the Sabbath walk home from synagogue, the timing of last night’s storm couldn’t have been worse.

“My best friend was coming back from synagogue and the tree fell on him,” said Rabbi Pimchus Bobrovski.

The victim, Larry Krause, was a well-known Manhattan-based attorney.

“I’m really shocked,” Bobrovski said. “We don’t now anything yet, unfortunately.”

The Teaneck Police Chief provided more information. “This is one of those freak situations, you know. it’s a 50-foot tree that snapped about 10 feet off the ground, snapped completely off, in half and just fell on top of them. It’s just an unfortunate situation with the high winds.”

Teaneck police confirm Mr. Krause and another unidentified man were killed when a tall tree snapped under the force of strong winds and fell on them.

“Just coming from the synagogue, and never made it home,” Bobrovsky said.

  6. I was a customer of Ovadia in his NYC Leather retail store.. It was always a pleasure to go into his store and have him show me the latest styles. I still have the 3 coats I bought from him over the years. I am very saddened by his tragic death. My his family find peace.

  7. Ovadia was the husband of my friend Susan. I knew him when Susan firs met him many years ago. She always talked so highly about what a kind and good man he was. He brought light into her life. He was a special man and a wonderful husband and father. May G-d give Susan and their children the strength to carry on. We are so heartbroken and so saddened by loss of Safi, Helaine & Karl Bocker.

  8. Larry was my friend, and also my attorney, for over 18 years. I was away last week and just learned of his tragic death today. There are no words to describe my shock and dismay. A wise, witty, and intelligent individual. He just had a baby! Larry was a great and kind man, a family-oriented and deeply spiritual individual, who always made time for the people he cared about. I will always think fondly on all our lengthy conversations about life, and all the ironies it brings. Thank you for everything you did for me, Larry. You were always there as a friend when I needed one. You will be sorely missed, my brother.
