candle-small5[Updates, video and levaya info below.] 8:47 p.m. It is with great sadness that we report the tragic passing of Mr. Moshe Menora z”l, of Skokie, Illinois, who was killed while flying in a private plane. Mr. Menora was flying with his grandchildren, who were visiting from Israel for the summer, when the plane crashed briefly after take-off shortly after 5 p.m. in St. Ignace, Michigan, near the I-75.

Mr. Menora and three grandchildren did not survive.

One other grandchild, a 13-year-old who was ejected from the aircraft, is in critical condition. Tehillim is being said for Nesanel Yosef ben Simcha Sima.

Further info will be posted as it become available.

Update, 10:26 p.m.: Matzav.com spoke with R’ Yanky Meyer of Misaskim who related that Mr. Menora, an experienced pilot and Chief Executive of Tri-United Management in Chicago, had taken his four visiting Israeli grandchildren – from Bet Shemesh and Har Nof – on a day trip when his plane malfunctioned and crashed after refueling in St. Ignace, Michigan, as reported earlier.

The day trip to Makinac Island ended in tragedy for the 72-year-old grandfather and three of his granddaughters, Sarah Klein, 17, Rikki Menora, 17, and Racheli Menora, 15. Sarah Klein was a daughter of Rabbi Zev and Kelly Klein. Rikki and Racheli Menora were daughters of Shalom and Sima (Fogel) Menora.

13-year-old Yossi Menora, son of Shalom and Sima Menora, continues to be treated for serious burns he sustained after being ejected from the aircraft and was slated to undergo surgery. All are urged to continue davening on his behalf.

Update, 1:47 a.m.: R’ Yanky Meyer told Matzav.com that Misaskim has been in contact with the chevrah kadisha in Michigan and the the niftarim are currently in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The work to ensure proper kavod hameis is not over, says R’ Yanky, but by later in the morning, it is hoped that final arrangements will be in place to ensure a proper kevuras Yisroel without delay.

Mr. Menora is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sima Menora; his son, Sholom Menora; and his daughters, Mrs. Miriam Schreiber and Mrs. Kelly Klein.

Update, 8:40 a.m.: The levayos are tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. at Congregation Or Torah on Dempster in Skokie.

  4. Mr. Menora, was a kind and decent man, in ways that many will never know.
Aside from his business acumen, he was a generous, fair man, with a lot of compassion for humanity, and especially his employee Sharon Leahy, of over 35 years. She has suffered greatly with cancer for the last 10 years of her employment. He stood by her, with her own tragedy and gave her much support. His friendship, direction, kindness and concern was always there for her.
He will be greatly missed, by all who knew and respected this great man.
Sincerest condolenses to the Menora family.

  5. I don’t know any of the people involved here but my heart hurts for this family. It is obvious so many loved this man. I can only hope their last thoughts were of sharing a wonderful day here in Michigan with a loved grampa and his grandkids. I saw this on CNN and Wanted to let the family know that someone cares, even if they don’t know them. Peace to all of you.
