On Thursday, President Donald Trump once again joked about the possibility of serving a third term in the White House in 2028.
His casual comment came during one of the events for the National Prayer Breakfast. Trump explained that he decided against participating via Skype and opted to attend in person at the Washington Hilton instead, according to a video shared on Mediaite. “But no, I want to be here with you. And I have been here with you. And I do that despite the fact that they say I can’t run again. That’s the expression: ‘Sir?'” Trump remarked, adding, “Then somebody said, ‘I don’t think you can.’ Oooh! No, I want to be with you regardless. And it’s an honor.”
Last month, Trump expressed uncertainty over whether the Constitution prevents him from running for office again. “I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure, because I don’t know … I think I’m not allowed to run again,” he told a gathering of Congressional Republicans in Miami.
One week after his November 5 election victory, Trump also made a lighthearted comment about the prospect of a third term. “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we’ve got to figure something else,'” Trump joked during remarks to House Republicans at a hotel in downtown Washington, D.C., sparking laughter from some of his supporters.
The 22nd Amendment, which was ratified in 1951, restricts a person from serving more than two terms as president. The amendment reads: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”
