President Trump declared on Monday that Canada and Mexico no longer have any opportunity to negotiate their way out of the impending 25% tariffs on imports, which are scheduled to take effect at midnight.

During a press conference at the White House, a reporter inquired whether there was still time for the two neighboring nations to strike a last-minute agreement to prevent the tariffs.

“On the tariffs, is there any room left for Canada and Mexico to make a deal before midnight?” the journalist asked.

“No room left for Mexico or for Canada. No,” Trump responded.

“The tariffs, you know, they’re all set. They go into effect tomorrow.”

Last month, the former president had postponed the imposition of the 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum hurried to assure him they would take stronger measures against illegal immigration and the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.

Despite reports that illegal border crossings between the U.S. and Mexico reached their lowest point in 25 years this past February, Trump expressed frustration on Monday, indicating that he was still dissatisfied with the efforts to curb the influx of fentanyl.

“So you understand, vast amounts of fentanyl have poured into our country from Mexico, and as you know, also from China, where it goes to Mexico and goes to Canada,” he stated.

In addition to Mexico, China is also facing trade penalties, with a new 10% tariff set to be enforced due to its role as a primary supplier of fentanyl that eventually makes its way into North America.
