Former President Donald Trump has called for the imposition of a compulsory death penalty for individuals who kill police officers following the tragic murder of NYPD Det. Jonathan Diller.

Trump, speaking at a campaign rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, urged Congress to pass legislation ensuring that those found guilty of such crimes face capital punishment. This demand comes in the aftermath of his attendance at Diller’s wake in Long Island.

“I will ask Congress to send a bill to my desk ensuring that anyone who murders a police officer will receive immediately the death penalty,” Trump told the crowd, a line that drew a standing ovation.

“We’re going to do that, and you’ll see the whole situation come to a halt,” he added.

Trump’s support for executing convicted cop killers dates back to at least 2015, during his initial bid for the White House. He reiterated this stance during various incidents, including the tribute to slain NYPD officer Miosotis Familia in 2018 and after the ambush shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in the runup to the 2020 election.

The legal status of capital punishment varies across states, with 27 permitting it while 23, including New York, and Washington, D.C., have abolished it. The alleged perpetrator in Diller’s case, Guy Rivera, faces charges including murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Reflecting on his experience at Diller’s wake, Trump expressed admiration for the strength displayed by Diller’s widow, Stephanie, and the broader family. He recounted the overwhelming display of love and respect witnessed at the funeral, highlighting the profound impact Diller had on the community.

Describing the incident as “vicious,” Trump recounted Diller’s courageous response to the attack, underscoring the dangers faced by law enforcement officers. He also criticized what he termed as “migrant crime” and pledged to address it through the establishment of a federal task force.
