President Donald Trump described the European Union as a “foe” to the U.S. In an interview on CBS News’ Face the Nation today, Trump appeared to suggest America’s longtime EU allies are more of a rival than even Russia, the Daily Beast reports.

“I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now you wouldn’t think of the European Union but they’re a foe. Russia is a foe in certain respects. China is a foe economically, certainly they’re a foe,” he said. He went on to say being a foe “doesn’t mean they are bad,” just that they are “competitive” and “want to do well.”

Claiming to “respect” EU leaders, the president also reiterated accusations that the EU has “taken advantage” of the U.S. on trade and NATO.
