President-elect Donald Trump publicly expressed his support for Mike Johnson to become House Speaker on Monday, following a conflict earlier this month regarding government funding. The disagreement had deepened divides within the Republican Party and placed Trump’s leadership ambitions at risk.
Despite a previous clash with Johnson over the speaker’s decision not to suspend the debt ceiling, Trump threw his full support behind the Louisiana congressman, hoping Johnson would secure the position in January.
“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!”
Trump, who is set to take office as the 47th president, had originally pushed to link federal spending cuts to the removal of the debt ceiling. In this effort, he allied with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and fiscal conservatives within the House GOP, effectively stalling early versions of the funding bill.
On December 20, Congress passed a more pared-down version of the bill, which omitted the debt ceiling provision but still made significant cuts to other government spending.
In his post, Trump took the opportunity to criticize Democrats for running “very expensive” campaigns, pointing out the high cost of the campaigns for President Biden and Vice President Harris. He described their administration as a “sinking ship.”
“IT WAS A DISASTER!!!” he exclaimed. “LETS NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN.”
