The upcoming trial concerning the alleged interference in Georgia’s elections by former President Donald Trump is slated to be broadcasted on television and live-streamed, as confirmed by the presiding judge on Thursday.
Judge Scott McAfee of the Fulton County Superior Court announced that the legal proceedings will be accessible via a YouTube stream managed by the court. This multimedia coverage will encompass television broadcasting, radio broadcasting, and the inclusion of still photography.
During a court session focused on media coverage protocols within the courtroom, Judge McAfee stated, “In line with the spirit of transparency here, we have followed Judge [Robert] McBurney’s model, and we have been livestreaming all of our major proceedings on a Fulton County-provided YouTube channel. And our plan was to do that with this case as well. So there’s going to be a YouTube feed the entire time.”
As of now, the judge has not established a specific date for the commencement of the trial.
Former President Trump, aged 77, entered a plea of not guilty to 13 felony charges on Thursday, which are connected to his alleged endeavors to reverse the results of Georgia’s 2020 election. Interestingly, he opted not to appear in person for the scheduled arraignment on September 6, alongside his 18 co-defendants. The arraignment itself will also be televised.
The trial in Georgia constitutes a significant milestone, as it will mark the inaugural occasion when cameras are allowed to capture the complete unfolding of proceedings pertaining to one of the four criminal indictments issued against the former president. A fleeting moment of photographic access was granted in April when photographers were permitted into a Manhattan courtroom during Trump’s arraignment for charges linked to purported hush money payments.
Initially, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis proposed a trial commencement date of March 4, 2024. However, last week, she revised her proposal to October 23, 2023, in response to demands for a swift trial from co-defendants Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, both former Trump campaign attorneys. Meanwhile, Trump’s legal team submitted a request to the court on Thursday, seeking the separation of his case from that of the two campaign lawyers.
