On Friday morning, President Trump greeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, where they shook hands before finalizing a deal regarding mineral rights. This agreement, according to the U.S. president, could serve as a stepping stone toward bringing an end to the ongoing Russian invasion that has persisted for three years.
The deal allows the United States to take a share in Ukraine’s rare-earth mineral resources. Trump has referred to this arrangement as a strategy for America to recover the substantial financial support given to Ukraine over the course of the war. Additionally, the deal provides Kyiv with implied security assurances, with the presence of American personnel involved in mining operations, although the commercial viability of the venture may take years to materialize.
Trump, 78, gave Zelensky a firm handshake while resting his left hand on the shoulder of the Ukrainian president.
“He’s all dressed up today,” Trump remarked about Zelensky, addressing the press gathered outside the West Wing.
