trumpDonald Trump may enter the presidential election in 2012, but that does not mean the New York real estate mogul will enter the race as a Republican.

Mr. Trump is reportedly considering entering the 2012 presidential campaign as an independent candidate. In remarks made to the Wall Street Journal, the billionaire businessman suggested that there was “concern” among Republicans that he might run as an independent.

Mr. Trump has said he would likely enter the general election as an independent candidate if he lost the 2012 Republican presidential primary.

“I think the Republicans are very concerned that I [may] run as an Independent,” Mr. Trump told the Journal, which published the remarks Tuesday. “I am very conservative,” he continued. “The concern is if I don’t win [the GOP primary] will I run as an Independent, and I think the answer is probably yes.”

An independent bid by Mr. Trump would certainly present major problems for any potential Republican presidential candidate and would likely aid President Obama’s campaign.

The possibility of a Trump independent bid comes as the Republican topped the latest CNN poll, released Tuesday. Mr. Trump ties former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee as the leading potential Republican presidential candidate.

The last major third party candidate, H. Ross Perot, ran in the 1996 election against incumbent President Bill Clinton and GOP hopeful Sen. Bob Dole and garnered 8.4 percent of the vote.

  1. All Trump is going to do is split the ticket and Obama will win again. Independent is a poor plan if they are trying to win in 2012.
