On Thursday, President Donald Trump revisited his suggestion that Egypt and Jordan could absorb Palestinian Arabs from Gaza, a proposal he had previously raised. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump expressed assurance that the two countries would go along with the plan, despite both nations’ leaders having already rejected it.
“They will do it, they will do it. They’re going to do it. We do a lot for them, and they’re going to do it,” Trump said confidently.
The president initially introduced the idea over the weekend, revealing that he had discussed it with Jordan’s King Abdullah II. “I’d like him to take people. I’d like Egypt to take people,” Trump commented about the Jordanian king. “You’re talking about, probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say, ‘You know it’s, over.’”
Trump emphasized that the proposed resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza could either be a short-term or long-term solution, referencing the region’s long-standing history of conflict. He noted the historical context in which such decisions would be made.
Trump reinforced his stance on Monday, revealing that he had also broached the subject with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. “I’d like to get them living in an area where they can live without disruption, revolution … when you look at the Gaza Strip it’s been hell for so many years,” Trump explained.
“I wish [Sisi] would take some [Gazans]. We helped them a lot, and I’m sure he’d help us. He’s a friend of mine. He’s in a very rough part of the world, to be honest. As they say, It’s a rough neighborhood. But I think he would do it, and I think the King of Jordan would do it too,” Trump added.
On Wednesday, for the first time, Sisi publicly responded to Trump’s proposal. He firmly stated that Egypt would not participate in the displacement of Palestinians, calling it an “act of injustice” that could jeopardize Egypt’s security.
