A report from the Washington Post says that on Monday the Trump administration is preparing to announce a connection between the use of Tylenol during pregnancy and the likelihood of autism, a claim that runs counter to established medical advice.
The same report noted that officials are expected to unveil a plan to look into whether the drug leucovorin could possibly serve as a treatment for autism. The Post cited four people familiar with the pending announcement who spoke anonymously since it has not yet been made public.
Current medical guidance maintains that Tylenol, sold over the counter in the United States as acetaminophen and known abroad as paracetamol, is considered safe for women who are pregnant.
Trump hinted at the coming announcement while speaking at the memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, telling those present, “I think we found an answer to autism.” The day before, he had called the forthcoming news “one of the most important things that we will do.”
Earlier in September, the Wall Street Journal reported that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was preparing to declare that using Tylenol during pregnancy might be tied to autism spectrum disorder, a condition that affects social interaction, communication, and is associated with repetitive behavior.
According to the Post, certain early-stage clinical trials that tested leucovorin in children with autism showed “what some scientists describe as remarkable improvements in their ability to speak and understand others.”
Kennedy has argued that the nation is facing an “autism epidemic” that he attributes to “environmental toxins.”
Although extensive research has been conducted over the decades, no definitive cause of autism has been established. Many researchers hold that genetics, potentially in combination with environmental factors, are likely contributors.
