Former President Donald Trump was greeted with enthusiasm upon his return to his New Jersey golf club after pleading not guilty to more than three dozen counts related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents following his departure from office in 2021.
Addressing a crowd of supporters at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, Trump compared his situation to political persecution seen in fascist or communist nations and called for the immediate dismissal of the case, stating that it was detrimental to the country. He said that he witnessed an outpouring of love in the streets of Miami and accused President Biden of orchestrating his prosecution, labeling special counsel Jack Smith as “a deranged lunatic.”
Earlier in the day, Trump was arraigned on 37 counts in a federal court in Miami. Describing it as “the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country,” Trump expressed his sadness and deemed it a corrupt act by a sitting president to have his political opponents arrested on false charges. During his speech, he paused briefly as the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to him, responding with cynicism about the timing of the celebration alongside the charges. The charges against Trump include conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding and concealing documents, making false statements, and other related offenses.
According to the indictment, Trump and his aide Walt Nauta allegedly maneuvered boxes containing classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, aiming to evade federal authorities by relocating the material within the property. Trump is accused of concealing some of the documents from his attorneys, leading them to mistakenly inform the Justice Department and FBI that only a few dozen documents had been found. The FBI subsequently seized over 100 classified documents from Trump’s private residence.
Trump argued that he retained the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago because he had not yet had the chance to review them, claiming that they contained personal belongings and memorabilia. He pointed out a perceived double standard, highlighting the lack of indictment for Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden despite allegations of their mishandling of classified records. Trump suggested that his own indictment served as a distraction from corruption claims against the Biden family, including the recent allegation of a $5 million bribe received by Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
Attempting to portray his federal criminal case as a potential advantage for his candidacy, Trump characterized it as part of a longstanding witch hunt against him, referring to the discredited 2016 election claim involving a Moscow hotel bed incident. He also mentioned his impeachment in 2019 for pressuring Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, asserting that he had been proven right. Trump referenced Senator Chuck Grassley’s revelation of alleged incriminating tapes involving a Burisma executive and Joe Biden, urging Republicans to stand firm against foreign corruption. He concluded his speech by vowing to restore justice and make America great again in the upcoming 2024 election.
The White House declined to comment on the case, while President Biden refrained from sharing his reaction during a press briefing.
