President Trump on Tuesday called on the Justice Department to take action against Barack Obama following the release of a report accusing officials from Obama’s administration of manipulating intelligence about Russian interference during the 2016 election.
The report, issued Friday, led Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to submit criminal referrals to the DOJ, alleging that Obama-era officials had orchestrated what was described as a “treasonous conspiracy.”
While speaking from the Oval Office during a meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Trump was asked who he believed the Justice Department should investigate. “Based on what I read, and I read pretty much what you read, it would be President Obama. He started it,” Trump responded. “And [then-vice president Joe] Biden was there with him and [former FBI director James] Comey was there and [former DNI director James] Clapper, the whole group was there. [Former CIA director John] Brennan. They were all there in a room, right here, this was the room.”
Trump continued by pointing to documents he believes prove Obama was at the center of the plot. “If you look at those papers, they have him stone-cold and it was President Obama. It wasn’t lots of people all over the place, it was them, too. But the leader of the gang was President Obama, Barack Hussein Obama, have you heard of him?”
“He’s guilty, it’s not a question,” Trump declared. “This was treason, this was every word you can think of.”
He said Gabbard had informed him that thousands more documents are expected, and he doubled down on labeling Obama the “ringleader.”
The memo released Friday also named other high-profile officials such as Clapper, Brennan, and Comey. Trump has long maintained that the investigation into Russian election meddling and any alleged ties to his campaign was baseless and politically driven.
In March, Trump signed a directive ordering the full release of documents related to “Crossfire Hurricane,” the FBI’s code name for its probe into Russian interference.
“The witch hunt that you should be talking about if they caught President Obama absolutely cold, Tulsi Gabbard. What they did to this country in 2016, starting in 2016 but going up all the way going up to 2020 and the election, they tried to rig the election and they got caught and they should be very severe consequences for that,” Trump said.
He also referenced his decision not to pursue legal action against Hillary Clinton, saying, “I caught” her, but chose to “let her off the hook” because she was married to a former president.
“It’s time to go after people. Obama’s been caught directly,” Trump asserted. “What they did in 2016 and in 2020 is very criminal, it’s criminal at the highest level so that’s really the things you should be talking about.”
