President Donald Trump has made it clear that Ukraine’s ambitions of becoming a NATO member are off the table as he prepares to welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for discussions.
At the same time, Trump expresses his desire to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future, hoping to negotiate a resolution to the conflict that erupted when Russian forces launched an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
While the Republican leader refrains from specifying the compromises he will urge both nations to consider, he reinforces his administration’s stance that Ukraine’s bid to join the Western military alliance is not a feasible option.
“NATO, you can forget about it,” Trump states. “I think that’s probably the reason the whole thing started.”
