President Trump signed an executive order delaying tariffs on certain imports covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for one month.
Approximately 38% of Canadian imports and 50% of Mexican imports fall under the USMCA and will temporarily be exempt from the 25% tariff that Trump put into effect on Tuesday.
This partial suspension comes after discussions Trump held with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday.
Trump had originally imposed sweeping tariffs on imports from both Canada and Mexico after those nations did not meet his demands to curb the influx of fentanyl and illegal immigration into the United States.
The president had previously made exceptions for automobiles, which remain unaffected by the tariffs, while Canadian energy imports are subject to a reduced 10% tariff.
