President Trump on Tuesday sued the Democratic-controlled House Ways and Means Committee, the New York state attorney general and a New York state tax official to try to block any potential efforts by lawmakers to obtain his state tax returns.
The president filed the lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C., alleging that House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) is considering using a recently passed New York state law to try to get Trump’s state tax returns.
New York Attorney General Letitia James expressed confidence that Trump’s effort would fail.
“President Trump has spent his career hiding behind lawsuits, but, as New York’s chief law enforcement officer, I can assure him that no one is above the law — not even the president of the United States,” she said in a statement.
