President Trump indicated on Thursday that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine might be nearing a conclusion, following his discussions with representatives from both nations.
“Great talks with Russia and Ukraine yesterday,” Trump, 78, wrote in an early post on Truth Social.
“There’s a good chance of ending that horrible, very bloody war!!”
The president’s comments came the day after he shared that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to begin talks “immediately” in an effort to end the devastating conflict in Europe, the largest and most deadly land war since World War II.
Trump, who has repeatedly claimed the war would not have unfolded during his presidency, mentioned that both he and Putin had expressed interest in meeting in person.
“We expect that he’ll come here, and I’ll go there, and we’re going to meet also, probably in Saudi Arabia,” Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
Later, he added that he planned to reach out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to update him on the planned discussions, hoping to initiate the peace process.
“[W]e want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“No more lives should be lost!”
Meanwhile, Zelensky confirmed that he and Trump had “a meaningful conversation” about working toward peace.
“No one wants peace more than Ukraine,” Zelensky remarked.
“Together with the US, we are charting our next steps to stop Russian aggression and ensure a lasting, reliable peace. As President Trump said, let’s get it done.”
