Two staff members from the agency overseeing Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were taken into custody following accusations that they were involved in leaking surveillance footage of the fatal midair crash to CNN.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) employees are facing allegations of unlawfully copying records and are charged with computer trespassing, according to an announcement made by the agency on Monday.

The controversy is connected to a disturbing video acquired by CNN last week, which provided a shocking new perspective of the crash over the Potomac River, as reported by ABC News.

The fatal collision on Wednesday evening involved a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet, claiming the lives of all 67 passengers and crew members on board both planes.

The exclusive footage presented a more detailed and clearer view of the tragic event, including one video showing the helicopter darting across the screen from the left as the American Airlines plane neared the airport.

Another brief video captured the dramatic moment when the Black Hawk, which was carrying three soldiers, and the Bombardier CRJ700 flew toward each other before the two aircraft collided and exploded.

Both videos were taken with cell phones, as CNN reported on Friday.

On Friday, Mohamed Lamine Mbengue, 21, from Rockville, Maryland, was charged, and on Sunday, Jonathan Savoy, 45, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was also charged, as stated by the MWAA in an email.

Mbengue was detained at the Arlington County Adult Detention Center but was released shortly after, while Savoy was given a summons by the magistrate and was also freed.

The airport authority did not provide any additional information on the matter Monday evening.

The MWAA, established by Congress over 30 years ago, is responsible for overseeing operations at Reagan National and Dulles International airports, among other duties.

As of Monday, efforts to retrieve the wreckage of the ill-fated American Airlines flight were underway, with most of the victims’ bodies having already been recovered from the frigid river.

Once the parts from the plane are brought to land, the recovery of the Black Hawk helicopter will proceed.

The military helicopter had onboard Army Capt. Rebecca Lobach, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves, and Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara, while the commercial jet was transporting over a dozen individuals connected to the close-knit world of figure skating.

Questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the midair crash, and a federal agency is currently investigating the incident.
