The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is warning people not to try to roast marshmallows over a volcano.
A Twitter user asked the USGS Volcanoes Twitter page if it is “safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents? Assuming you have a long enough stick, that is?”
“We’re going to have to say no, that’s not safe. (Please don’t try!.),” the USGS responded Tuesday.

Such stupidity. Our tax dollars hard at work. I wonder how long it took for the spokesman to formulate such a brilliant official statement?

How could anyone ever get close enough to be able to do that? This makes no sense.
Oysh, I was going to do that this Sunday with my kiddies but thank God they issued this warning. Now I know its dangerous.
Workers work on lava with ordinary safety shoes. One shift and they take the shoes off and throw them out. They’ll be given a new pair of safety shoes the next workday.
Geologists who deal with liquid lava, take samples etc. have special equipment.
You can roast on the lava, but be very careful that the solid crust you are standing on does not split. Is it worth it? Usgs has a good point, but who am i to lecture anyone.
If you roast lots of food on the lava and eat it, there is also a problem with sulphur and other not healthy (and not nicely tasting) substances.
If you really MUST, roast a potato! It will not catch fire. A marshmallow might.
