Two U.S. officials said Thursday it was “highly likely” that an Iranian anti-aircraft missile downed a Ukrainian jetliner late Tuesday, killing all 176 people on board.

The crash came just a few hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack against Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops amid a confrontation with Washington over the U.S. drone strike that killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general last week.

“Somebody could have made a mistake on the other side.,” President Donald Trump said, noting the plane was flying in a “pretty rough neighborhood.”

“Some people say it was mechanical,” Trump added. “I personally don’t think that’s even a question.”′

  1. I don’t disagree that it’s highly likely Iran downed the Ukrainian jetliner but if the missile wasn’t shot directly at the plane (1) how likely is it for a missile to directly hit a plane by mistake? (2) how did air traffic control and the pilots warning systems not noticed an approaching missile? How hard would it be to avoid if wasn’t shot at close distance

  2. “Highly likely.” As if they don’t know that it was shot down when everyone else knows. Why don’t they let us know who was on that plane that they needed to get rid of?

  3. 1) The missiles are generally designed to hit a heat source, so it wouldn’t need to be a random collision. I’m no expert, but I believe that this is elementary. 2) Missiles move pretty rapidly. Air traffic control, less so. 3) Jetliners are cumbersome. 4) Maybe it was close distance.
