The United States is set to destroy what remains of its declared stockpile of chemical weapons in a major milestone for international arms control efforts. Under the Chemical Weapons Convention, the U.S. has until Sept. 30 to eradicate the remnants of its stockpile, which, at the end of the Cold War, amounted to 30,000 tons.
Workers at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky are about to destroy the last of 51,000 M55 rockets filled with the GB nerve agent—also known as sarin—that have been kept at the site since the 1940s. And in Colorado, staff at the Army Pueblo Chemical Depot finished destroying a cache of around 2,600 tons of mustard blister agent. “One thing that we’re really proud of is how we’re finishing the mission. We’re finishing it for good for the United States of America,” Kim Jackson, the manager of the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, told the Associated Press. Read more.
That’s silly. Why can’t the US donate them to Afghanistan?
This is good. And it is about time the nations do so.
When informed that the US is scrapping its final remnants of chemical weapons, one skeptical, health-conscious US citizen told reporters on Friday: “Oh really?! What about the tainted US tap water that was recently discovered in a study, and the synthetic ethyl vanillin that was used in various A&W root beer and cream soda cans instead of the good ole’ aged vanilla that was listed in the ingredients? Can we be certain those chemical weapons will be discarded?! I doubt it.”
“I don’t believe the US is scrapping it’s entire stockpile of chemical weapons,” the skeptical US citizen said, “and I don’t believe we will ever be protected from consuming dangerous chemical weapons in our food and beverage supplies. It’s a hoax! We’re all probably better off fasting for the rest of our lives.”
“I’d rather fast my entire life than consume soda loaded with aspartame and other chemical weapons,” he said. “Better to be hungry and thirsty than to spend half my life in the emergency room purchasing chemically laden snacks from the hospital’s vending machines, which will ultimately force me to spend my ENTIRE life in the emergency room.”
When will they scrape Big Pharma / CDC’s modern day bio chemical weapons?
