UMAN FOR ROSH HASHANAH: 1,000 Jews Already in Ukraine for Rosh Hashanah, Another 50 Charter Flights Slated to Go to Uman

It was less than two weeks ago that Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk said that Jews who travel to Uman, Ukraine, for Rosh Hashanah to daven at the kever of Rav Nachman of Breslov are risking their lives, yet over 1,000 Jews are actually already in Uman, and sources states that approximately 50 charter flights are booked to take even more people there for Rosh Hashanah.

Ambassador Korniychuk had said that “no matter what we say, Orthodox Jews will try to get to Uman again. We understand your willingness to go to Uman and favor your support for Ukraine, but this is not the right time. We cannot guarantee your security.”

Korniychuk is right that no matter what officials say, some people will try to get into the war-torn country for the Yomim Noraim, despite the Ukrainian embassy in Israel stating that tourists are actually banned from the country.

As of now, the aforementioned charter flights are going to be taking travelers to Moldova, from where they will be trying to get their way into Ukraine through a land crossing.

  1. לא תעשון —איש כל הישר בעיניו
    ‘כי יעשה הישר בעיני ה
‘כי תעשה הטוב והישר בעיני ה

The Torah emphasizes the importance of being מקריב קרבנות
in the proper designated place. Only where it is ‘ישר בעיני ה
may one bring his קרבנות. It should not be done where
man feels it’s right in his eyes but it must be where it’s right in
    the eyes of Hashem.

Perhaps ‘הישר בעיני ה can also be applied today to the proper
place where the עבודה of תפלה should be done.

*Abandoning the Bais Knesses or Bais Midrash to Daven at
a בית הקברות especially those who leave ארץ ישראל doesn’t
sound right. It doesn’t sound like ‘הישר בעיני ה even though
tens of thousands of Yidden with good intentions do so.
לא תעשון —איש כל הישר בעיניו

This year there is an additional problem The ongoing war in
Ukraine makes it a מקום סכנה a place where one
may not go to Daven there.

Traveling to a war zone to Daven is like entering into a
חורבה to Daven which is אסור. Two of the three reasons
are because a חורבה is a (מקום סכנה ( מפולת- מזיקים.

    • Nobody is going to the holy tzaddik in Uman zy”o to makriv karbonos. They’re going to have the tzaddik help them
be a good advocate in Shamayim for Klal Yisroel, and for you too, if you include yourself in Klal Yisroel. Going to a Makom Kadosh, even in Chutz Le’Aretz, is mesugal for the tefillos to be very mekabel.

By the way, the Torah also mentioned that Koleiv went to Chevron to the tziyon of the Avos Hakedoshim. This might be where we got the idea from.

  2. This is being reported as if it’s all okay. Well guess what. It’s not okay. It’s obviously a sakana to go, and it isn’t a “Mitzvah” shemosrim nefoshos aleha, so I don’t get it. Of course people will go, there’s lots of misguided people in the world, but it is not okay by any means.

    • If people go there, it’s obviously not a sekanah. Let’s them go for those who can’t and poyl aus yeshuos for Klal Yisroel. Why didn’t we here from you before the “misguided people” were moser nefesh to take the sakana quacksine?

      • Your comment borders on the incoherent. If people go there it obviously isn’t a sakana? Which people go there? We’re talking about a place where bombs could fall at any moment, given Russia’s constant random attacks. No one’s going there, except these yidden.

They should be poyl aus yeshuos for those who can’t go? People go to Uman because supposedly Rav Nachman promised to shlep them out of gehinom if they come to daven at his kever. They’re not being poyl yeshuos for anyone but themselves (ie if you don’t go, Rav Nachman won’t shlep you out of Gehinom).

And your final salvo, where was I when people were taking the vaccine? First of all, maybe I think the vaccine helped. Second of all, according to your own logic, if people were taking the vaccine, it obviously isn’t a sakana.

        Please, think before you type.

  3. Unless you are devoted to traveling to Uman for Rosh Hashana every year, it’s hard for you to understand how people feel – that it’s the highlight of their Avodas Hashem. Personally, I have no desire to go at any time to a place where my ancestors were murdered but I am not them and they are not me. Before we get all judgmental on others, we need to put ourselves in their shoes.

    • The Ukrainians love money more than they hate Jews. They very much want the Jews to come. But they know that if they encourage them to come now, and then a disaster occurs r”l, there will be hell to pay, figuratively and literally, financially and politically. So your sentiment is somewhat erroneous, imho.

  4. I never understood this whole concept of leaving ones wife and children for Rosh Hashanah. The first day of the new year should be spent with your family and davening in your own Shul. Why go to the Ukraine and support a town full of vicious anti-Semites. It makes NO sense. Anyone agree?

    • Why don’t we hear from when chassidim go to their Rebbes and leave their wives behind in different countries, different cities? Isn’t it the same?

    • Do you understand the concept of leaving one’s wife and children to spend the day in shul on Yom Kippur? Can you imagine what your wife would say if you decided not to go to shul on YK to spend the day with the kids and her? I don’t think most frum women would be too enthralled. Maybe you shouldn’t judge someone else that conducts themselves differently, when the concept isn’t so difficult to understand when you look through their perspective.

  5. @anonymous
-you don’t need to understand everything hopefully one day you will
    – by yom tov it says ושמחתי בחגך not on Rosh Hashanah
Let’s daven that these holy people that wanna go out of there way to daven get there safe and have us and all klal Yisroel in mind

  6. Going to Uman for Rosh Hashanah may not be my personal derech and mesorah, but there’s certainly a lesson in dedication and perseverance to be learnt from these people. Agree with their mehalech or not, they are truly willing to be moser nefesh for what they believe in. May we all be zocheh to serve Hashem beahava bemes ubetamim, and may Hashem see how much His children strive to serve Him and bring the Geulah where we’ll all be together in Yerushalayim Habenuyah.
