A United Nations panel has ruled that Britain and Sweden should pay compensation to WikiLeaks activist Julian Assange for what it characterizes as his “arbitrary detention.”

Assange has been hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid arrest by the British authorities and extradition to Sweden for questioning over an alleged sexual assault, which he denies.

The UN panel says that his self-imposed exile effectively means Assange is being held arbitrarily. The panel’s decision is not binding, but the British government said it would appeal. Read more.

  1. Wow! According to this logic, anyone fleeing any country to avoid any questioning, can effectively sue that country for compensation.
Moronic doesn’t even begin to describe this.

  2. Because he’s hiding out in Ecuador’s to avoid arrest, the country that wants to arrest him should pay him money? Based on that logic the U.S. owes cop-killer Joanne Chesimard big bucks for the time she spends hiding in Cuba to avoid arrest. Is the U.N. completely insane? (That was a rhetorical question, we know the answer is “Yes”.)
