The United Nations on Tuesday released grim figures regarding the global tourism industry, showing that the sector lost a staggering $320 billion in revenues during the first five months of 2020.
The coronavirus epidemic, the UN said, has now jeopardized the livelihoods of millions of people across the globe, threatening food suppliers, restaurants, hotel chains, airlines, and much more, amounting to “more than three times the loss during the Global Financial Crisis of 2009.”
International tourist arrivals fell by 300 million during the period, or 56 percent, as lockdown restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19 hammered the travel sector, it added.
