Once again, the United Nations Security Council has delayed a vote on the long-pending resolution regarding the conflict between the Hamas terror monsters and Israel, according to diplomatic sources. This delay, the fourth this week, stems from ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure the support of the United States, which has indicated backing for the current version of the draft resolution.
The backdrop includes the US vetoing a resolution on December 9 that called for a ceasefire but failed to condemn the Oct. 7 massacre perpetrated by the Hamas monsters in Israel. The earlier resolution also omitted acknowledgment of Israel’s right to self-defense.
Earlier reports pointed to a potential stumbling block concerning a proposal for the UN to establish a monitoring mechanism for aid entering the Gaza Strip. However, the latest draft, which now calls for “urgent steps to immediately allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access” and the creation of conditions for a lasting cessation of hostilities, seems to have dropped this demand.
The draft resolution also insists that all parties “allow and facilitate the use of all… routes to and throughout the entire Gaza Strip, including border crossings… for the provision of humanitarian assistance.” Additionally, it calls for the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
The decision to postpone the vote to later today aligns with the US’s expressed readiness to support the resolution in its current form, following its opposition to several proposals during the drafting process this week. The United Arab Emirates sponsors the resolution, and key modifications were made to secure compromise and US backing.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Ambassador to the UN, stated in a briefing, “We have worked hard and diligently over the course of the past week with the Emiratis, with others, with Egypt, to come up with a resolution that we can support. And we do have that resolution now. We’re ready to vote on it.” She emphasized that the resolution aims to provide humanitarian assistance, aligning with Egypt’s priority to establish a ground mechanism supporting such aid.
