gary-ackermanOne New York Democratic lawmaker took a shot at President Bush amid the celebration over the slaying of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

“This is the ‘Mission Accomplished’ moment President Bush only fantasized about,” Rep. Gary Ackerman said on CNN, referencing Bush’s 2003 “Mission Accomplished” speech when he announced the end of major combat operations in Iraq.

Reaction from lawmakers and politicians has steadily flowed in since President Obama announced the killing of the man behind 9/11 late Sunday night, but very few have contained examples of overt partisanship.

Republicans have largely thanked both Presidents Obama and George W. Bush for their work in hunting down bin Laden, while Democrats have primarily mentioned Obama and not Bush.

Interestingly, bin Laden’s slaying was announced eight years to the day after Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech.

Ackerman, who represents areas of the New York City metro area, celebrated bin Laden’s death and praised Obama’s national security team for pulling off the complex operation.

“We cut the head off of the worm,” he said.

He warned, though, that bin Laden’s slaying does not mean the head of radical extremism.

The head could “grow back,” he said.

  1. Politicizing this event is the ultimate in NO CLASS. Ackerman should have his citizenship revoked. He doesn’t seem to understand what it means to be an American!
