United Airlines says it wants women and people of color to make up at least half of the 5,000 pilots it plans to train this decade at its new flight school, a push to diversify a career traditionally dominated by white men.

Tuesday’s announcement comes as U.S. airlines resume pilot hiring halted last year during the pandemic and as they find themselves in the crosshairs of politically charged issues involving race.

“We want to make sure that we are tapping into a big deep talent pool and not limiting ourselves to just one section of the pond,” Chief Communications Officer Josh Earnest, a press secretary for former President Barack Obama, said on a Zoom call with journalists.

  1. This is 100% illegal under US law. https://www.eeoc.gov/prohibited-employment-policiespractices
Under the laws enforced by EEOC, it is illegal to discriminate against someone (applicant or employee) because of that person’s race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. It is also illegal to retaliate against a person because he or she complained about discrimination, filed a charge of discrimination, or participated in an employment discrimination investigation or lawsuit.

The law forbids discrimination in every aspect of employment.

The laws enforced by EEOC prohibit an employer or other covered entity from using neutral employment policies and practices that have a disproportionately negative effect on applicants or employees of a particular race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), or national origin, or on an individual with a disability or class of individuals with disabilities, if the polices or practices at issue are not job-related and necessary to the operation of the business. The laws enforced by EEOC also prohibit an employer from using neutral employment policies and practices that have a disproportionately negative impact on applicants or employees age 40 or older, if the policies or practices at issue are not based on a reasonable factor other than age.

  2. nobody cares what race or gender is the pilot. All we care about is the skills of the pilot.
Oh, what percent of NBA players are not black?

  3. Make sure I don’t fly United. They are more concerned about optics than they are about hiring the best and most qualified pilots.

  4. Remind me to not fly United. I want the best pilots flying my plane. Gender and race should be irrelevant when choosing whom to pilot a plane. The only important thing is their skill!!!

  5. Do you want the person responsible for the safety of hundreds of passengers to have been hired for any reason other than their flying ability, especially if an emergency situation arises?
There’s no doubt that there are many excellent pilots who are minorities and/or women, but that should play no part in the hiring process. If you’re aboard a flight that suddenly has an emergency, do you want the pilot to be a man, a woman, a Jew, an Asian, or so you simply want the very best pilot in the world, regardless of what they look like?

  6. I guess all you sheeple have already forgotten how United dragged a Chinese American doctor off of their plane, smashing his teeth in the process. United discriminates against Asians and should be boycotted!

  7. Women and minorities dont want to be hired based on gender, skin color, birthplace etc. It would be interesting to see what happens based on their decision.

  8. Dear United,

I understand and sympathize with your quandary. While you really, really want to do the right (woke) thing, there are many Neanderthals (see above comments) who, for some silly reason, think safety should trump (bad word, I know) political correctness.

Fortunately, in my Solomonic wisdom, I have a solution. Since a) 50% of your incoming pilots must be women and/or minorities and b) per the wokies, people are allowed to self-identify as male, female or other, simply have half of your male, Caucasian pilots self-identify as females.

Although society doesn’t (yet) allow folks to self-identify as other races (e.g. no matter how much I enjoy Chinese cuisine I’m still irrevocably stuck as my boring, Caucie, Jewish self), gender fluidity is not only allowed, but encouraged. No need to have it interfere with your personal life either – you’re a man until you board the plane, then you’re a woman until the moment you deplane, thereby satisfying all wokie requirements while still going home to your wife and kids at night. Of course joining a mid-flight minyan may be problematic, but surely some wise individual can address that issue.

    Yours truly,
    Loch N. Kupp

    P.S.
I never took flying lessons, but I identify as a pilot. 787’s are my first preference, but I can temporarily defer to those with more seniority. Where can I sign up?
