The South Fallsburg Town Legislature in South Fallsburg, NY held a hearing today with possible plans to close all camps and bungalow colonies for this summer.

Askanim in the Jewish community suspected that this was intended to target the Orthodox Jewish community in particular.

Following talks with representatives of the Jewish community, South Fallsburg Supervisor Steve Vegilante reportedly postponed tonight’s hearing.

However, the meeting did in fact occur, lasting about an hour and half, ending at about 7:45 p.m. The conclusion of the meeting was to keep public comments open over the next two weeks for people to email in their feelings to the town. Those public comments will be incorporated into the record and the town legislature will vote on this newly proposed law in two weeks at the next public meeting.

    • unfortunately if you own a summer home they have your tax dollars & most camps are tax exempt & the local businesses are NOT organised enough to say something i actually called the director of a big goyishe hotel with whom i have a business relationship during the year

finally getting rid of the whole catskill summer rush is a very difficult question w many pros & cons but worth revisiting

  1. a few points;
    1. this specific hearing/ vote is about 2nd days pesach & all shabatons till the summer
    2. it is obvious that they will add extensions to the proposal .. to july & aug they dont want us there and they now have an excuse
    3. if the governer doesnt let them close the camps, the local town officials will say we are way backed up and only have 2 inspectors so if they come and find a few things they wont come back for a 2nd inspection and all will be on “shpilkes” yes open , no open maybe monday maybe tuesday….
    4. or they may start enforcing existing rules that they looked away from in the past like sq foot per bed….with the social distance excuse…
    NOW FROM OUR SIDE…
    1. the camps that are private and have to cover $ & hire staff.starting w girls .. will start folding right after yomtov ( they have much more planning & staff needs to know … college. sem ..shiduchim… reg. jobs
    2. the chassidishe camps are an extension of a mosad/a service to the kehila will try their best opening for bucherim first , but will be hanging to the last second
    3. there may be a push this year to finally put an end to the 2 months ( 10 weeks off by the girls summers) & be like lakewood / monsey one month – for ruchnius & financial reasons
but as we learned in the past month NO ONE ( inc. myself) knows anything & we control nothing will see whats hashems plan

  2. Dear Fellow Visitors,

This is directed at all of us and our children too.
    Do not speed
    Do not litter
    Do not block traffic
Do not speak disparagingly even in Yiddish about the goyim
Do not treat anyone with less respect than you would treat your fellow Yidden
    Pay your help promptly
Leave an older person get ahead of you on line
Remember to behave when in public. This includes at Walmart
    Obey social distancing rules
Remember that you are being judged as a Jew because you are identifiable as a Jew
    Don’t argue over stupid things
    Remember to smile
    Not everything is antisemitic

    • dear concerned brooklynite -before i respond to you i have run camps & a catskill business & im the type of guy that picks up a piece of garbage by the lake in woodbourne & have gladly given boosts to ” goyim”
i agree its not anti ” semitic” they just dont want us there , its like we are from a diff planet
      1. there is a huge culture gap from yid to goy & from city people to sullivan locals that is the source of a lot of animosity some examples camp music, lines in shoprite , a school bus making 3 stops on the 42 , lehavdil even the gemoro talks about an ish kafri.. suburbun / dorf type life vs. city person
TRAFFIC- overall there is minimal traffic yes even friday only a few hot spots (gombos…)for a few hours 1-4 to make up for that for 26 hours every weekend there is not a single jewish car on the road
      2. the source of OUR disdain is to the town boards not the average resident the local officials continue to make colony & camp directors miserable over issues that have NO EFFECT on any neighbors ,we are basically out of their way for 10 months i believe we have been very bad at PR most locals have not had bad experience
another source of tension is bli ayin horah our affluence , mishpochos,.cars….& that we as yidden do things in bulk we move in & out of parks … bowling w 100’s of kids moving in & out in a few minutes so yes maybe you got a little push
the garbage on the floor is the one thing on your list that is a presistent problem , most kids in camp or colony have never spoken to a local goy ( aside from the caretaker) most kids are behind the bushes & leave camp a few times a summer at most

  3. This is a very dangerous anti semitic precedent. Don’t be fooled that this is a one time ban just because of the Coronavirus. The anti semitic ungrateful board wants to ban “those Orthodox” for good. They already made noise last year when the threat of measles was still out there. They want our tax money but they don’t want us.

  4. I am a bungalow owner in the Town of Fallsburg and I participated in the meeting tonight until the end. This is being way overblown. It was clearly stated by the board member hosting the meeting that this does NOT apply to people who own their bungalows, nor does it apply to summer camps. This rule change is only applicable to those colonies that are rental colonies where the units aren’t individually owned. It also simply delays their occupancy dates from April 1 until May 15. Thats it! I dont know any yeshivas or groups who are beginning their seasonal summer program before June anyway, so this probably impacts almost nobody. The Town claimed they were doing this to make some rules more uniform and clean- they didnt do such a great job explaining this, but whatever. Either way, this does not impact any individual bungalow or summer home owner who wants to come up now or anytime. It does not impact sleepover camps, day camps, etc. People are blowing this WAY out of proportion. IF they were even trying to be anti-semitic and affect us, they’re lousy at being anti-Semites, because this doesn’t accomplish what you’re all scared they’re attempting to do!

Matzav.com, this is pretty terrible reporting- its written after the meeting occurred, yet doesnt report any facts about the meeting, only that anonymous “askanim” are scared that everyone is out to get them. LOL why dont you confirm this is not fake news after the meeting occurred prior to posting this factless news article? Are you just trying to promote fear mongering and to create machlokes between us and the locals??? Why?

There WAS one citizen (not a board member) who said a random stupid comment about how the Orthodox community doesnt obey social distancing, etc. He was way out of line, it was irrelevant to the discussion, he was not even a board member, and he was dead wrong. However, the hate and immaturity that started flying out of the frum participants of the call was embarrassing. Just because we’re right doesnt mean we bare our fangs in public and make a chilul Hashem. I was really embarrassed of our behavior.

    • How can you say it doesn’t impact camps? You cannot have social distancing in a camp setting. As far as bungalow colonies. The Dads go home on Sunday. Where do they live in the city? Boro Park, which is a hot spot? Then they come back up the following Friday. The risk is too high. It took one man in Westhchester to infect hundreds in his community. Then he traveled to Rockland. He put 1000 into quarantine. Lack of consideration for the health of others is not to be tolerated, by anyone. If you don’t own a home in the Fallsburg area, stay home. Don’t over tax the resources.

    • Don’t make this about anti-semitism. ALL camps and bungalow colonies will not get Certificates of Occupancy. The same is being done in Ulster County. Sorry that the majority of Bungalow colonies and camps in Fallsburg are owned and run by the Orthodox Jewish communities. Summer renters and camp goers do not have a say. They don’t pay taxes. There’s one hospital in the area. As a homeowner, I don’t want to see the region’s resources overtaxed by those that don’t want to adhere to the rules set forth by the State. I found it appalling to see how many of the Orthodox in Boro Park, and in my neighborhood of Midwood, not wearing masks. Not staying 6 ft. from one another. I want to enjoy my home in the Catskills without fear of infection should I have to go to the grocery store, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. There’s no need to take an entire family to these stores. One person can do the shopping. In the past, I’ve avoided Shoprite and Walmart on any day other than Saturday. Please be considerate of those not in your communities.

  5. There is no problem this year if this Coronavirus continues into the summer. We can all stay home and save money. Tzneus is not a problem as the streets are deserted and all types of clubs are closed. It’s a pure society. Stay home. Save on expensive living in camps and bungalows.

  6. Thanks so much Ben Medetsky for your post clarifying the issue! Shew! Although, we do need to curtail our “in your face” behaviour. Face it brothers, we do overdo it and it should not be this way. We are an am kadosh and we are G-d’s chosen nation. We need to behave like the King’s princes. This now is a G-d-given opportunity for introspection.

  7. just wondering whet happen’d at the end, did they suspend all summer camps and bungalows in fallsburg for 2020, if someone can plz reply with the updates ill really appreciate it! thanks in advance!

    • No real decision, yet. But, based on the Governor’s plan to open, and what must be followed, I doubt any camp can open. How do you enforce Social Distancing at a camp? Explain that. That’s what camp owners will have to do. Show a plan and stick to it. I highly doubt they will. They don’t obey rules in Brooklyn. As a home owner in the Fallsburg area, I do not want an exodus from hot spots in Brooklyn to Fallsburg. Bungalow colonies will be inspected by NY DOH. Again, owners of rental bungalow colonies are a business that must adhere to the Governor’s rules for reopening. It’s up to citizens to keep an eye on establishments and people that violate the rules. I see a lot of arguments coming. People already yelling at Orthodox for not wearing masks in public.
Please stay home. Nobody spending 2 months in a camp or rental bungalow has the right to possibly bring the virus to those that live and pay taxes in Sullivan County.
