isis3The U.S. war against ISIS has begun in Syria: Tonight, the United States – along with Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, according to ABC News – launched cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs at ISIS strongholds around Raqqa and along Syria’s border with Iraq.

The strikes hit about 20 targets, including ISIS command and control centers, weapons depots and a recruitment center, the BBC reported. The network said Islamic State fighters appeared to be abandoning their Racca headquarters and fanning out to make themselves less easy targets.

“I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against [ISIS] terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles,” said Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, in a statement. Damascus says Washington informed Syria’s U.N. envoy about the strikes beforehand, according to reports. Read more at The New York Times.
