US Army Can’t Hide Five Billion Dollar Camouflage Failure

The U.S. Army has decided to redesign its uniforms after the current generation of “pixel camouflaged” fatigues, which cost $5 billion to design, have been shown to make soldiers stick out more than blend in, according to a Daily Mail report on Monday.

The failed pattern, which was adopted by the army in 2004, combines gray with pixelated green markings, like mosaic tiles. The objective was to give soldiers better camouflage in both desert and woodland landscapes. But the project’s critics state that the uniform did not perform as needed in any landscape.

“The army designed a universal uniform that universally failed in every environment,” an army specialist who served in Iraq told the Daily Mail. “The only place the camouflage worked was in a gravel pit. As a cavalry scout, it is my job to stay hidden. If we can see our own guys across a distance because of [the camouflage], then so can our enemy,” he said.

According to the report, critics of the pixelated army uniforms claimed that the main reason for their design was to rival the U.S. Marine’s new “cool” looking uniforms which have also incorporated pixels. Some went as far as to blame the uniforms for the deaths of many servicemen.

The project to design the next universal camouflage reportedly will take years to complete, and will include hundreds of simulations for each prototype. Until a replacement is provided, U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan will revert to the traditional camouflaged fatigues. The pixelated uniforms will be discarded.

One camouflage expert told the Daily Mail, “You’ve got to look back and say what a huge waste of money that was.”
