The US State Department condemned the potential legalization of numerous settler outposts in the West Bank, deeming it “dangerous and reckless,” in response to reports of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s purported efforts.
Expressing concern, Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the US’s opposition to settlements, citing their violation of international law. Patel reiterated the US’s stance, urging Israeli officials to refrain from supporting outposts deemed illegal under both international and Israeli law.
According to Channel 12 News, Smotrich, with authority over civilian matters in the West Bank, allegedly directed several ministries to prepare for providing public services to the 68 illegal outposts he seeks to legalize.
The coalition agreement mandates the government, led by the Religious Zionism party and Likud, to legalize young settlement outposts and provide essential services, such as electricity and water. These outposts, euphemistically termed “young settlements,” were established in the 1990s and 2000s without formal government approval.
In February 2023, the government approved the legalization of nine outposts, subsequently expanding to ten, with arrangements set to facilitate the legalization process for the remaining outposts, as stated by Smotrich.
Israel’s settlement expansion in the West Bank since 1967, justified by historical and security reasons, has drawn criticism, particularly from the US. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has actively promoted settlement growth, further complicating peace efforts.
The settlements encroach upon land envisioned for a future Palestinian state, including the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem as its capital.
Recent US sanctions targeted an associate of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and two entities allegedly funding settlers implicated in violence against Palestinians.
Regarding Israel’s potential military action in Gaza’s Rafah, Patel emphasized the need for a credible plan addressing Washington’s concerns regarding civilian safety.

Is it any different than and Harris’ & Mayorkas’ reckless open border policy? How about this: POTUS and his reckless cabinet should take care of America and let Israel’s legally elected officials take care if it’s country.
