The United States Postal Service has announced a temporary pause on receiving inbound packages from China and Hong Kong, as stated on its official website. This measure, which begins on Tuesday, will remain in place until further notice.
According to the announcement, the suspension only applies to packages, while the delivery of letters and ‘flats’—such as large envelopes—will continue without interruption.
The USPS has not yet clarified whether this suspension is linked to former President Donald Trump’s recent policy move to end ‘de minimis’ shipments from China and other countries.
Trump’s decision to stop Section 321 de minimis imports aligns with his strategy to impose additional tariffs. These include a 10% tariff on Chinese goods and 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, though implementation of these tariffs has been temporarily delayed by one month.
A report released in June 2023 by the U.S. congressional committee on China highlighted that nearly half of all goods shipped to the United States under the ‘de minimis’ category originate from China.
