U.S. to Give Up Control of Web

The U.S. government plans to give up control of its authority over how domain names and web addresses are administered on the Internet. The federal government’s hold on this system has come under harsh criticism following the revelations about NSA surveillance.

The move to relinquish authority is likely to please many who are concerned that the U.S. takes advantage of its control over the Web. The officials who made Thursday’s announcement said a new organization would be created to oversee the administration of the Internet, but exactly who that oversight body would be and when the transition would take place has yet to be determined. Read more at The Washington Post.
